Kanji (籠) Crib__
The Kanji Crib is one of my most meaningful projects. Designed and built for my daughter’s arrival, it continues a cherished family tradition. When my sisters and I were born, my grandfather crafted a handmade crib for each of us. Inspired by this legacy, I set out to create a modern interpretation that is both deeply personal and timeless.
Drawing on Japandi aesthetics, the crib combines clean, straight lines with softened details that highlight the natural beauty of wood. Functionality and adaptability were central to the design, so the crib is flat-packable for easy transport and assembly, and features a system evolves with a child’s needs. In the early months, either side can be removed to create a semi co-sleeping arrangement beside the parents’ bed, providing safe and convenient nighttime access. The base adjusts to two heights as the infant grows, and the sides can later be removed entirely to convert the crib into a toddler’s first bed, maximizing longevity and usability.
Safety and sustainability guided material choices. The crib is constructed from architectural-grade plywood from Decospan and finished with 100% natural organic beeswax, creating a healthy, tactile environment that complements the calming, natural ethos of the design.
